Clinical PhD Programme

At a Glance:

Our Clinical PhD Programme provides support for biomedical and veterinary clinicians who wish to conduct research in Low and Middle Income Countries (L-MIC).

During year one of a 4 year fellowship, you will:

  • complete a Masters of Clinical Research (MRes) with a choice of externally quality assured mini-projects & Diploma Course in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (DTM&H).
  • Work with supervisors who are leaders in their field in shaping your PhD project idea
  • Receive detailed professional assistance in planning, budgeting & management for the duration of your fellowship

During years 2-4 you will work in a L-MIC completing your research project, before returning to the UK to complete and defend your PhD thesis.

We also offer a 3 year fellowship, designed to provide flexibility, for example for those with a pre-defined research project, or who do not wish to spend extended periods of time overseas.

Our Centre is proud to deliver a Wellcome Trust Clinical PhD Programme, a flagship scheme supporting the most promising medically qualified clinicians wanting to undertake rigorous research training. The Centre will appoint a number of Clinical PhD PRogramme Fellows every academic year. This Programme aims to address the serious health problems faced by developing countries, covering a broad scope of issues ranging from biomedical and veterinary research, through to health policy sciences. The programme offered is principlally a 4-year PhD, generally started after around 5 years of postgraduate training. A 3 year option is also offered, for those with a pre-defined research project.

Funding

A Clinical PhD Programme fellowship provides funding to support the following:

  • A clinical salary
  • Fees for first year training & PhD registration in subsequent years
  • Research consumables and travel
  • Overseas allowances for the period a Fellow is based overseas.


Eligibility

To apply, Medical graduates must have passed the relevant specialty postgraduate exam e.g. MRCP, MRCS, MRCOphth/FRCOphth Part 1, MRCPsych, MRCOG Part 1, MRCPCH, FRCA Part 1. GPs are advised to contact the office to clarify their eligibility. It is anticipated that most applicants will have already commenced specialist training, but this is not essential. Medical appointments will be made according to the University's standard clinical pay scale.

Veterinary graduates must be eligible for registration with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and have at least 2 years post graduate (clinical, research or other relevant) experience. Veterinary graduates are advised to contact the office to clarify their eligibility. Veterinary appointments will be made according to standard (non-clinical) University pay scales.
