2014 Annual Scientific Meeting Report

The Wellcome Trust Liverpool Glasgow Centre for Global Health Research Annual Scientific Meeting took place in Chester from Sunday 14th to Wednesday 17th September 2014 at the Best Western Premier Queen Hotel. This 2.5 day event started on Sunday evening with an informal reception hosted by colleagues from the Glasgow Wellcome Trust Centre for Molecular Parasitology, which focussed on short informal introductions from a gathering of more than 40 delegates, followed by an enjoyable speed networking session.
The main conference event started on the Monday morning with the full number of over 140 delegates expected to arrive for a series of five themed sessions over 2.5 days that would include virology, parasitology, bacterial infections, inflammation & immunology and non communicable diseases. The event was kicked off with a series of introductory talks from senior colleagues and representatives from the Malawian College of Medicine and the MLW Clinical Research Programme along with the Universities of Liverpool & Glasgow, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and the National Institute of Mental Health & Neurosciences in Bangalore – India. Talks were given by 41 speakers, with an additional 13 speakers in the speed talk session. A poster session was also operated between the Tuesday sessions.
The social side of the event included a gala dinner on the Monday evening and BBQ on the Tuesday evening. Delegates also found time to take in a walking tour of Chester’s historic defensive walls network – for some valuable time to network and discuss their research.
The event closed with a series of prizes award for the best speaker in each themed session, these were:
- Parasitology: Ian Maccormick
- Virology: Stacy Todd
- Bacterial Infections: Ben Kumwenda
- NCDs: Natasha Lelijveld
- Inflammation & Immunology: Shaun Pennington
- Speed talk/posters: Anmol Kiran
